DIGITAL CLASS

Entry and fees

The competition is between individual photographers – entry as a pair or group is not permitted. The entry fee for the digital class is 10 euros. Students, the unemployed, pensioners and minors may enter for a reduced price of 5 euros. The fee for members of Ylioppilaskamerat ry is 3 euros.

Equipment

Any digital camera equipped with a removable memory card is permitted. The images will be read off the memory card at the competition office.

Time and duration of the competition

Fotomaraton starts on the competition day at 17.00. The competition office will open at 15.30. You may enter the competition at any time after the start. Entrants in the digital class are not required to register at the office prior to starting the competition – it is permissible to register and pay the fee when submitting the images at the end of the competition.

The competition ends at 23.00 – competitors must have arrived at the finish – i.e. at the office – before this time. Images cannot be submitted after this time. The competition time therefore spans 6 hours.

Subjects, their announcement, and order of completition

The subjects of Fotomaraton will be announced in three successive sets of four subjects with an interval of two hours between each set. The announcements will be made on the Fotomaraton website (www.fotomaraton.net). The timetable is therefore as follows:

subjects 1-4 at 17.00
subjects 5-8 at 19.00
subjects 9-12 at 21.00

Each subject may be interpreted freely – there is no formal definition provided.

When submitting the complete set at the end of the competition there must be exactly 12 images on the memory card in the correct order. No off-camera post-processing or manipulation of the images is permitted.

Judging

The competition entries will be judged by a 2-4 person jury appointed by Ylioppilaskamerat ry. All competitors’ images will be judged as whole sets. The best set and first runner-up will be awarded a prize. The completition speed of the assignment is not taken into account. To maintain a level playing field, however, competitors must arrive at the competition office before 23.00 to submit their images. Any late entries will be discarded.

Rights to the images

All rights to the submitted images will be retained by the competitor; however, by entering the competition, the competitor grants Ylioppilaskamerat ry the right to use the submitted images free of royalty in contexts related to the Fotomaraton competition (e.g. in advertising the competition and in conjunction with announcing the winners in the society’s annual print publication).


FILM CLASS

The fee includes a single film roll to be used in the competition (35mm, black-and-white), processing of the film and scanning.

Equipment

Any film camera capable of using 35mm film may be used. The images must be captured on to the film supplied for the competition (AgfaPhoto Pan APX 400 or equivalent at the organisers’ discretion), so those intending to enter the film class must visit the competition office to enter the competition and receive their film roll.

Time and duration of the competition

INSTAGRAM CLASS

Entry and fees

You may enter the competition using any personal Instagram account. Entry is free of charge.

Equipment

The Instagram class is inteded for smartphone cameras. Participation is via Instagram. Image entries must be uploaded before the end of the competition and must be tagged appropriately (see below).

Time and duration of the competition

Fotomaraton starts on the competition day at 17.00. You may enter the competition at any time after the start. The competition ends at 23.00 – all images must be published on Instagram before this time. Any images published at a later time will be barred from the competition. The competition time therefore spans 6 hours.

Competitors in the Instagram class may enter any number of images corresponding to any of the subjects – the whole set does not have to be completed. Entering multiple images for each subject is permissible.

The images must be tagged with both #fotomaraton2022 and #[subject number + subject without whitespace and punctuation] (e.g. subject number 1 ‘beautiful flower’ -> #1beautifulflower and subject number 12 ‘Actually, I like it a lot.’ -> #12actuallyilikeitalot).

Judging

The competition entries will be judged by a 2-4 person jury appointed by Ylioppilaskamerat ry. All appropriately tagged images published between 17.00 and 23.00 on the competition day are eligible.

In the Instagram class, the images for each subject will be judged individually. For each subject, the best image will be awarded a prize.

Rights to the images

Images published on Instagram are subject to any terms and conditions imposed by Instagram. Additionally, by entering the competition, the competitor grants Ylioppilaskamerat ry the right to use the submitted images free of royalty in contexts related to the Fotomaraton competition (e.g. in advertising the competition and in conjunction with announcing the winners in the society’s annual print publication).
